Soulful Christmas

Hued Songs and the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center Present Soulful Christmas. A multidisciplinary function, Soulful Christmas is a holiday celebration for all, featuring music, storytelling, and community. The concert will center on the re-telling of the classic story, The Night Before Christmas, with a local and cultural twist. Audience members will take a musical journey through decades of iconic music that has shaped the sounds of Black Christmas- ranging from gospel, spirituals, soul, and everything in between, led by a diverse cast of artists. This concert centers the celebration of Black Christmas and Black Memory and that this unlocks.

Soulful Christmas features a dynamic cast of powerhouse artists, led by Director & Choreographer Darius J. Manuel.

Fierce & Unbothered

Filmed in the Historic Hampton House, “Fierce and Unbothered” juxtaposes archival footage of the Civil Rights Movement with current images depicting protestors marching with signs to a mash-up of the iconic “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round” by The Freedom Singers with Beyonce’s “Freedom.”

The Juneteenth Experience 2021

Leading up to and culminating on June 19th, 2021 the experience will be a celebration of black joy, black arts, and black community. It will begin with an intergenerational community workshop series and conclude with a multidisciplinary performance of song, dance, spoken word, and film, along with pre-concert activity that will include BIPOC owned/operated artisans and vendors.

This program seeks to begin the conversation centered around African diaspora and it's impact on black religion and spirituality.

My Black Body Is.

My Black Body is an interdisciplinary short film, using song, spoken word, and photography to amplify narratives of what it means to walk through life in a body that is black. Black art song and original music provide the foundation to create this performance of celebration & reclamation of blackness that is part concert, part spoken word, and wholly theatrical.
